Details / Key Facts
Carpinus betulus – Hornbeam hedging is similar in appearance to Beech. It is a very hardy native plant which is more tolerant of wet and heavy soils than Beech. It retains its brown foliage for much of the winter but perhaps not as long as Beech. It makes a good screening hedge and tolerates both full sun or partial shade, acidic or chalky soils.

Carpinus are deciduous shrubs and trees with attractive foliage and hop-like fruit clusters in late summer and autumn
Further Information
Carpinus Betulusis is a large deciduous tree developing a fluted grey trunk. Leaves 5-8cm long, ovate, conspicuously ribbed, turning yellow in autumn. Catkins open in spring, followed by hop-like fruiting catkins to 8cm
